I don’t think I could exclusively narrow down a single motto I live by. But I’d like to say I have a song with my life ‘mottos’ in it.
“Paper Thin Walls”, by Modest Mouse is not only one of my favorite songs, but it’s has some lines I really admire:
“It’s been agreed, the whole world stinks/So no one’s taking showers anymore”
“Laugh hard, it’s a long way to the bank”
“Tow the line to tax the time, you know/That you don’t owe/I can’t be a fool for everyone that I don’t know”
I particularly like the last line. Maybe it’s selfish, and maybe it’s rude to ‘not give someone the chance’, but I don’t want to build relationships with people who aren’t worth it. I save alot of grief by not sucking up to people who won’t give anything back, or to people who are just fair-weather-friends. I’m not going to be a fool for someone I don’t trust and don’t have a reason to be with. I want to make relationships in my life that matter.
